D38 schools closed tomorrow, Dec. 16, due to potential security risk
The following information was received from Amy Matisek, Director of Communications, Lewis-Palmer School District 38
Law enforcement informed D38 administration of a potential risk involving schools in the Monument area Tuesday, Dec. 16. The information did not identify a specific school. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency and is researching and reviewing all information received.
Out of an abundance of caution, all District 38 schools will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 16. The day will be a remote workday for staff. Staff, students, and families are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to school administration or through Safe2Tell at safe2tell.org or 877-542-7233.
Two Palmer Lake trustees resign; Town attorney steps down
By James Howald and Jackie Burhans
This is an updated version of the newsletter article published Dec. 12
The Palmer Lake Board of Trustees meeting stretched past six hours on Dec. 11, covering lawsuits, recall elections and budget issues before ending with two unexpected resignations: Trustee Tim Caves and Town Attorney Scott Krob. After the meeting, Trustee Michael Boyett resigned effective Dec. 12.
Caves, who faced a recall effort, spoke during board reports to address residents. He said his tenure focused on fiscal responsibility, building community and securing a conservation easement at Lakeview Heights. Caves accused a small group of pushing Palmer Lake toward financial instability through personal attacks and recalls instead of honest debate. He warned the town was turning away from a revenue opportunity vital to its future, not a luxury.
In the current climate, service guided by stewardship and truth, where knowledge is respected is no longer possible, Caves said, announcing his resignation effective Dec. 12. He thanked supporters and his wife, Laurie, for standing by him.
Later, the board had scheduled an executive session to discuss its legal representation by Krob Law Office LLC. Trustee Roger Moseley said the resolution concerned the firm, not Krob personally. Krob, citing nine complaints, requested a public discussion and reviewed town code provisions for removing officers.
Krob outlined his credentials, including 40 years in municipal law, water rights expertise and long-term relationships with other Colorado towns. He defended his work and addressed complaints ranging from budget advice to annexation interpretations and appointment procedures.
Krob criticized Moseley’s conduct but urged him to focus on positive contributions. He then read his resignation letter, offering to assist during the transition. He said representing Palmer Lake had been an interesting adventure and his goal had always been to pursue the best interest of the town as directed by the board.
Moseley later expressed surprise, saying Krob was not “bad or evil” but had sometimes given poor advice that caused turmoil.
Boyett’s resignation letter says in part, “It seems civility, thoughtful comments, and the ability to see the other side of an issue have taken a back seat to anger and abuse.” He added, “In November of this year, I underwent a heart procedure that was brought on, in part, by the stress I feel as a Palmer Lake trustee.” He added, “My cardiologist advised me to get out of politics, so I am going to take his advice and resign my position as a Palmer Lake Trustee effective December 12, 2025.”
