By Harriet Halbig

The Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) will be upgrading a major system that allows patrons to check out books, reserve titles, browse the catalog, and manage their library experience.

There will be service disruptions from Nov. 29 to Dec. 11 while the upgrade takes place. During that time, patrons will not be able to place holds, items cannot be checked back in (they can be returned and will be held until Dec. 11), the online catalog and PPLD app will be unavailable, and new library cards cannot be created.

All PPLD locations will be closed Dec. 10 and 11 to test the new system and check items back in. There will not be a disruption to online databases, the Libby and Hoopla apps, and Pikes Peak Culture Pass.

Patrons will be able to request interlibrary loans and can check out materials with their library card or account number (staff will not be able to look up this information).

Following the transition, patrons will enjoy new features in the online catalog:

  • Book listings will be grouped by format (book, audiobook, large print).
  • Clickable author biographies will be available.
  • Titles will provide grade-level information and make suggestions for other materials.
  • The catalog will be able to offer possible results if the information entered is misspelled and make suggestions for similar materials
  • Patrons will have the option of having the system save their checkout history.

For up-to-date, detailed information on the transition, please see the district website, ppld.org.

Although the meeting room will be unavailable Dec. 1-11, some programs will be offered.

October Library Events – Book clubs, escape room, scrap exchange

By Harriet Halbig

Several special programs will come to the library during October. These include a time-travel- themed escape room for teens, a nature wand program for tweens, and a scrap exchange sponsored by Who Gives a SCRAP.

The Chronoshift Reality Rewritten escape room for teens ages 13 to 18 will be from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10. A simple joke gone wrong—an AI-generated post meant for laughs—spirals into a real-life disaster, derailing your friend’s hopes to be elected to the Student Council. Your mission? Travel back in time, change the flow of information, and fix the mistake. Can you undo the damage and repair your friendship? You’ll need to track down the AI-generated materials before they cause mayhem for your friends! It’s created by Loki’s Loop, a project of the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public. Registration is required at 719-488-2370.

The Third Friday Friends of Pikes Peak Library District Book Club will meet from 10:30 to 12:30 on Friday, Oct. 17. This book club is sponsored by the Tri-Lakes Friends of the Library. The October selection is Fuzz, by Mary Roach, an All Pikes Peak Reads title for 2025. All are welcome to attend.

Also on Oct. 17, from 4:30 to 5:30, there will be a Nature Wands program for tweens ages 9 to 12. Turn nature into art by designing a handcrafted nature wand. Young artists will weave, wrap, and create their project using a variety of natural and man-made materials.

In collaboration with Who Gives a SCRAP Creative Reuse Center, the library will host a Scrap Exchange from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Bring in your new, clean/gently used and unwanted craft materials and exchange them for “tickets” to purchase/exchange them for new-to-you craft supplies. The library will also have a fun up-cycling craft going on, so you can take your time and check for new inventory. January Library Events – 2024 Adult Reading Program announced; Toddler Time resumes

By Harriet Halbig

The 2024 Pikes Peak Library District Adult Reading Program will begin on Feb. 1 and last until March 31. More information will be in the next issue of OCN.

Monument Library will begin offering Toddler Time again in January. Sessions will be at 9:30 and 10 on Wednesday mornings, followed by Stay and Play.

Story Time on Tuesdays in Monument will not resume, but Family Story Time will continue at Palmer Lake on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:15.

There are a few changes on a district-wide basis. Use of The Hall adjacent to Penrose Library will be discontinued beginning May 1, 2024. A few reservations are still available before that date. Staffing posed a problem. The Special Collections department is now called Regional History and Genealogy. The department offers an extensive collection of maps, periodicals, government publications and pamphlets, and family history resources back to Colonial times. Materials must be used on site. Hours for the department are 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday.

Database resources will also change in 2024 as the district reviewed usage and expense. For details, please see the district website, ppld.org.

Happy New Year from the library, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

April Library Events – Quilt show continues

By Harriet Halbig

The quilts made by the Palmer Divide Quiltmakers will remain on display through April. Patrons can come and enjoy the variety of techniques and colors.

Above: Palmer Divide Quiltmakers (PDQ) held its 21st annual quilt show at the Monument branch library in March. Members contribute to the community by providing pillows, turbans, and hats for adults and children undergoing cancer treatment in the Colorado Springs area. The club’s Blanket Brigade members gather weekly to piece and tie quilts for local children in need of comfort. PDQ raises money at local craft sales to help bring quilters from around the world to speak at the meetings and conduct classes for members. PDQ welcomes new members and meets the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce, 166 Second St., Monument. Photos by Janet Sellers.

There will be many programs at the library for all ages during April. Go to our website, www.ppld.org and look under classes by location. In some cases registration is required.

We hope to see you soon at the library.

January Library Events – Explore the resources at your library

By Harriet Halbig

As we start a new year, come to the library or check online at ppld.org to see some of the resources available.

If you click on Research on the home page and open the list of data bases, you’ll find such possibilities as language instruction through Mango, genealogy resources, and such consumer resources as Consumer Reports. There are also a number of foreign language newspapers and magazines.

Under Find a Good Book, you can enter the title of a favorite book and see others which are similar in characters or plot. You can also see listings of all books in a given series.

In the coming year, children’s programs will remain on the same schedule with Toddler Time at 9:30 and 10 on Wednesdays in Monument and Story Time on Tuesdays at 10:30. There are two adult book clubs, one in the morning and one in the evening.

In Palmer Lake there is an adult book club which meets the first Monday of each month. Family Story Time is on Fridays at 10:30.

Check at the front desk for Take and Make kits for children or adults and check the website under Programs by location to see offerings for children, homeschoolers, teens, and adults.

We hope to see you soon at the library.

Accessibility Tools

We implemented an accessibility icon on the upper right of the screen. It is a figure with arms and legs outstretched in a dark gray circle. Clicking on the accessibility icon will open a toolbar with many options to adjust the text and the screen. We also implemented a dark mode tool, which appears to the left of the accessibility icon as a smaller circle that initially is half-gray and half yellow indicating the screen will adjust to the system’s dark mode setting. Clicking on the dark mode tool will switch it to a sun icon meaning light mode. Clicking again will switch it to a moon icon meaning dark mode. Clicking again brings it back to half-and-half. If the accessibility tools are obstructing something you want to view, you can open the accessibility toolbar and select "Hide toolbar." Leave the setting at the default of “Only for this session” and click Hide Toolbar. That will reveal a small dark circle containing a minus sign. If you click on the minus sign, the dark mode tool will be removed and the minus will change to a plus. Click on the plus sign to bring back the accessibility icon and the dark mode tool.
